About this Movie
Everyday People
This intimate ensemble drama tells the interconnected stories of a group of racially diverse New Yorkers who rub elbows in Raskin's, a venerable Brooklyn diner and NYC institution whose Jewish owner has just revealed he plans to sell off the place to make way for condominiums and newer, more "gentrified" establishments. Told over the course of a single workday, the film charts the employees' reaction to the sudden news, as impending unemployment is now added to their individual litanies of domestic and emotional anxieties. Revealing pieces of the characters' personal lives (some, in fact, have secrets that are never fully uncovered), the film provides a rich, slice-of-life portrait of people thrown together in pain and love, who generate disturbing conflicts and surprising bonds – all of which challenge conventional assumptions about class and racial identity.
