Kaoru Kamiya chases after “Hitokiri Battosai." Kaoru meets a man carrying a sword. She questions the man, but he seems to have no will to fight. As Kaoru dubiously looks on, the man introduces himself as Kenshin Himura, a “rurouni.”

The name of Kamiya Dojo has been cleared, yet no one wishes to join. Meanwhile, Kenshin catches a boy, Yahiko Myojin, trying to pickpocket his wallet. Kenshin offers the wallet, anyway. Yahiko resents his pity and has a reason to collect the money.

Yahiko is inspired by Kenshin and decides to quit pickpocketing, refusing to pay the gang controlling him and getting beaten up. Kenshin comes to his rescue. Since he could not solve the problem by himself, Yahiko wishes to become stronger.

At Akabeko restaurant, a group of activists gets into an argument. Sanosuke Sagara, who is there during the quarrel, blows away the activists with a single flick to the forehead. After seeing Kenshin's strength, Sanosuke challenges him to a fight.

Kenshin confronts Sanosuke, who shows his incredible durability after a strike from Kenshin. After more blows, Sanosuke falls to the ground. While in a daze, he recalls the reason for his obsession with victory and his past in the Sekiho Army.

Kenshin receives a request from the police to take down "Kurogasa," a serial killer targeting former Revolutionary warriors. Kenshin and Sanosuke escort Jusanro Tani. At 1:00 a.m., Kurogasa appears. His true identity: Jine Udo, a vagabond assassin.

Jine takes Kaoru hostage to fuel Kenshin's anger. During a fierce battle, Jine, wanting Kenshin to regain his former strength, inflicts the Nikaido Heiho "Shin no Ippo" on Kaoru, stopping her breathing and causing Kenshin's anger to reach its peak.

Sanosuke's friend has died from an opium overdose, but opium is banned and too expensive for the average person. A mysterious woman, Megumi Takani, appears. Kanryu Takeda's private army is trying to capture Megumi, who is carrying opium...

The fire-breathing Hyottoko of the Oniwaban Group raids Kamiya Dojo, unleashing his deadly "Fire Breath" onto Kenshin and Sanosuke. Fearing the Oniwaban's power, Megumi contemplates abandoning Kenshin and fleeing…

Sanosuke is unsettled, knowing Megumi made the opium that caused his friend's death. Megumi disappears, leaving a letter explaining she left willingly. Kenshin and the others find it unnatural, so they decide to head to Kanryu Takeda's residence.

Kenshin's group is confronted by Han'nya of the Oniwaban Group. He challenges Kenshin with his "Arm-extension Spell," but Kenshin uncovers its secret. Just when the battle seems over, Han'nya removes his mask and reveals his startling true face…

At last, Kenshin faces Aoshi Shinomori, head of the Oniwaban Group who pursues the title of "strongest warrior." Kenshin refuses to tolerate conflict without morality and the two warriors' blades clash, their pride and lives on the line.

Kanryu unleashes his ultimate weapon and rains bullets from his Gatling gun at Kenshin and Aoshi. To protect their leader, the Oniwaban Group must team up with Kenshin and use their unique abilities to counter the overwhelmingly powerful weapon.

Yahiko is starting to step away from his swordsmanship training from time to time, but it doesn’t look like he's ditching to slack off. Curious about what he's doing, Kenshin, Kaoru, and Sanosuke decide to follow him.

Kaoru, Kenshin, and Yahiko visit Maekawa Dojo for a training session. Isurugi Raijuta rudely breaks in, claiming concern about the future of swordsmanship. To defeat the dangerous challenger, Maekawa, the master of the dojo, takes on Raijuta, but...

Raijuta plans to revive the deadly nature of swordsmanship and views Kenshin as an enemy. Yutaro, a boy who claims to be Raijuta's apprentice, visits the Kamiya Dojo challenging Yahiko to a match, but there's something off about Yutaro's technique...

Yutaro sustains an injury from Raijuta's sword and may never be able to use a sword with that arm again. Yahiko knows very well what swordsmanship means to him and takes Yutaro to the final battle between Kenshin and Raijuta, whose duel begins...

At Akabeko, Tae asks Sanosuke to go buy a Nishiki painting on her behalf. Sanosuke finds a painting of the man he looked up to as his master in the Sekiho Army, Captain Sagara. Sanosuke, a gleam in his eye, makes his way to meet the artist.

Tsunan holds regrets surrounding the Sekiho Army. Sanosuke joins Tsunan in an attack on the Home Ministry, but Kenshin is there to stop them. Once again seeing a former Revolutionary warrior standing in his path, Tsunan hurls a flurry of explosives.

The group probes Kenshin for a story from his travels, requesting "a story that's unusual, fun, and includes a villain's defeat." Kenshin tells them about visiting Yokohama and a foreign doctor named Elder who was always wearing a mask.

In the past, Deian Ishizu was scheming to remove Dr. Elder, who did not seek monetary gain for medical services, disrupting Ishizu's business. Deian hired Western swordsman Espiral to get rid of Elder. However, Espiral's motive seemed different.

Kenshin is unsettled by a dream of the Shinsengumi swordsmen that he had faced as a Revolutionary warrior. A man with very unique eyes pays a visit to the Kamiya Dojo. When he meets Sanosuke, he claims that he is Goro Fujita, a medicine seller...

After defeating Akamatsu, Kenshin returns to Kamiya Dojo. Hajime Saito had introduced himself to Kaoru and Yahiko as a police officer to avoid suspicion. Hajime had honed his skills as a hitman, and now Hajime's ferocity was aimed at them.

The Head of the Home Ministry, Toshimichi Okubo, is behind Haijime's attack. Okubo asks Kenshin to go to Kyoto to stop a man who claims to be the successor of the Hitokiri Battosai. What is Kenshin's answer to this request for an assassination?
