Former nurse-turned-exotic animal broker Tonia Haddix fights to retain custody of her “kids” – seven chimpanzees bred as talent for commercials, photo shoots, and movies. Other chimp moms are introduced, including one who raised a baby chimpanzee alongside her own infant daughter.

When former Hollywood chimp Tonka disappears, PETA launches an investigation and a high-stakes legal battle escalates, particularly in light of another case in which a chimp named Travis nearly killed a Connecticut woman.

Actor Alan Cumming – who had worked with Tonka in a past movie – adds $10,000 to an existing reward for the missing chimp. The documentary crew then faces an ethical dilemma when they learn details about Tonka’s case, which are similar to a previous one in Oregon that took a dangerous turn.

Fantasy Island
While Tonka’s fate becomes clearer, Tonia struggles to let go and dreams of opening her own island sanctuary where she can live among chimpanzees.
