London, 1988. When her husband dies a sudden, dramatic death, Simone and her kids, Lenny and Tess, face public humiliation and a family estate now worth pennies, leaving them with no choice but to flee their formerly ritzy English life and return to Simone's no-frills childhood home in Newcastle, Australia. As Simone's lies about her upbringing bubble to the surface, her family and old “friends” grapple with seeing the expat -- whom they knew as “Sammy” -- for the first time in 20 years.
As Sammy and her kids face the reality that they may not be returning to London any time soon, Jim allows his lover Bev to convince him that Sammy is after their mother Jean's house. Meanwhile, Jean, who's been single and sober since the tragic death of her husband many years ago, tempts fate with a surprising attraction to a new man, and Sammy starts her new job as a secretary for an old schoolmate, Chris -- a crooked local MP who revels in the opportunity to punish her for his age-old unrequited crush. To complicate things further, Sammy's ex, Dan, is now teaching PE at her children's high school -- and he still hasn't forgiven Sammy for running away two decades ago with no explanation.
Hoping to blackmail their boss, Sammy and Fiona snoop around Chris' office for evidence to expose his shady business dealings. At school, Lenny and fellow misfit Bo bond over being bullied by their classmates and enamored with Abby, the girl next door. Later, Tess gets a rare opportunity to make a new friend, and Jim finds himself embracing his role as uncle. As Jean embarks on her first date with Peter, she wrestles with the temptation of alcohol -- and a potential full-blown romance.
Chris brings Sammy -- and her posh English accent -- to Sydney to help him impress some big-shot investors, giving her the perfect opportunity pitch herself as his partner-in-crime. Back in Newcastle, Jim is heartbroken after Bev dumps him for ditching her plan to sabotage Sammy, and Abby sneakily uses her new friendship with Tess to her advantage. After an incident at a Sydney casino, Sammy finds herself neck-deep in debt.
Determined to reclaim her worth amidst her harsh work environment, Sammy volunteers to help Chris' wife out at the school dance. Meanwhile, still pining for Bev, Jim hatches a scheme to win her back. At the dance, Dan and Sammy finally bury the hatchet, but their ceasefire distracts them from chaperone duties. Later, Tess begs Abby to stop seeing Scott, while a reckless request from Peter leads Jean down a dangerous path.
After a rough night at the vineyards, Jean is forced to examine her relationships with both Peter and her children. Sammy and Jim enlist Bev to unveil the truth behind the “complications” with her UK estate. Buoyed by the prospect of getting her house in London back, Sammy settles scores across town. Meanwhile, Tess and Lenny's involvement in Abby's life lands them in a ... sticky situation.
