About this Show
Was I a Sex Object?
For decades, Spanish television outlets have been using women's bodies and looks as a vehicle to attract viewers. Inspired by trends in Italian entertainment programming, the Spanish network Telecinco launched in 1990 and quickly gained a reputation for colorful and wild shows that featured scantily clad female dancers, singers and models. Treated like ornaments by the hosts beside them and audiences at home, these performers became known as "vase women." Featuring interviews with former performers, executives and experts, Was I a Sex Object? (¿Yo fui mujer florero?) delves deeply into the history and cultural repercussions of objectifying women on television -- and whether those beliefs persist on our screens and in our psyches today.
