Wandering through the galaxy, Basara stops by Planet Zola, a migration spot of the legendary Galactic Whales. He gets injured in a firefight between the Whale Poachers and the Galactic Patrol, but a girl named Elma helps him with his wounds.

Basara narrowly escapes death with the help of Elma's sister, Liza, an officer in the Galactic Patrol. However, he collapses again after recklessly leaving the hospital. Back on Macross 7, Gamlin has detected Basara's Song Energy and sets out to find him.

Lonesome
Basara becomes more determined than ever to have the Galactic Whales listen to his song after he hears about their legendary tale. Meanwhile, Liza overhears the poacher, Kariba, discuss his terrifying plans. To protect the whales, Basara flies out into space in a Patrol Valkyrie.

Zola - The Planet Where Galactic Whales Sing
Basara and Graham head back out to space where the fight over the Galactic Whales has already begun. As Basara's song plays out of the Galactic Patrol's speakers, Graham continuously attacks the great white whale. Just then, the Whale Poachers fire a Reaction Warhead at the white whale!
