When filthy rich video store magnate Johnny Rose (Eugene Levy), wife Moira (Catherine O'Hara), and their kids, David (Dan Levy) and Alexis (Annie Murphy) suddenly find themselves broke, they are forced to live in the town they once bought as a joke.
The life of psychologist Marcos Dorrego and that of his daughter is in danger after the inauguration of his patient, Víctor Noriega, as president of Argentina. Forced into a dangerous power game, Marcos must recover from his depression and find a way to manipulate Víctor and get him to resign, without knowing who is really behind this dark conspiracy.
Marcos' life takes a turn for the worse when he discovers that he plays a key role in Víctor's removal from office. Now, he is forced to climb out from his well of depression to survive and protect Sofía. There is a secret hidden in Marcos' past, which Lauren somehow managed to unearth. Without knowing who is behind his orders, Marcos is forced to play along in Lauren's game and sabotage Víctor's therapy with his new psychologist to get him back as a patient, even though this decision further complicates his relationship with Sofía.
Once Marcos gets Víctor back as a patient, Lauren's demands seem to have no end. She demands extremely specific information about the president's private life, looking for weak spots to hit Víctor as he tries to implement his environmental reform. To meet these demands, Marcos turns to Pedro, an endearing and computer-savvy patient, who will help him investigate Luciano, the president's right-hand man and his next victim.
To get Víctor to resign, Marcos decides to isolate him from all the people in his circle that he trusts. Taking advantage of the environmental reform crisis, Marcos uses the political tension to sow distrust in Víctor's mind, installing the idea that Luciano, his right-hand man, is planning to betray him. Thus, Víctor becomes convinced that Luciano has long-term plans for a candidacy.
After the accident, Marcos' internal struggle intensifies as he tries to regain control of his life. Meanwhile, the president and first lady face their worst crisis yet. And Marcos has an opportunity to go after Ana and bring down Víctor's entourage. Luciano becomes obsessed with finding out who betrayed him, and Lauren's threats become more intense.
In an attempt to regain control of his life and mend his relationship with Sofía, Marcos contacts Beltrán, his old psychologist. An investigation on the death of Verónica, Marco's lover, is opened. Luciano draws increasingly closer to finding the answer to his expulsion. Marcos, now more alert than ever, must navigate a terrain full of traps as the pressure mounts. The lithium law is passed, but the Víctory is attributed to Ana. Víctor feels betrayed and in a heated argument ends his relationship with her. Marcos confesses to Sofía that Lauren has threatened him and what his final mission with Víctor is.
Tensions reach their peak when the truth comes to light. Víctor finally signs his resignation for an indefinite period due to his inability to govern. Meanwhile, Marcos tries to find a way to recover. The final decisions of both men mark a point of no return, leaving a trail of uncertainty and emptiness.
