When a man moves his family from Michigan to Los Angeles, he realizes that the secret to fitting in with his new neighborhood is befriending the opinionated man who lives next door.
Mike takes on the build of a '71 Camaro to honor a friend battling cancer. A paddle wheeler boat with a storied past is Avery's first project at his new shop, but it turns into a dangerous salvage mission when the boat sinks. Meanwhile, the Rust Bros crew restores a bus fit for doomsday preppers.
Mike restores a 1968 Beaumont for a charity auction, but scrambles to save the build and the fundraiser when his budget gets pulled out from under him. On his first build, Avery steals a Rust Bros client with a German-made Unimog, putting his friendship with Mike at risk.
Mike agrees to restore a 1957 GMC truck for a neighbor's daughter, whose mounting list of demands include converting the engine to burn alcohol for fuel. Avery tries to wow his Unimog client, but his lack of finesse could lose him the project to the competition before it's complete.
Custom builder James West buys Mike's Willys Jeep to create a WWII bomber-themed truck for a client -- but there's a catch. The price of the truck will be determined by the winner of a "Shop Truck Challenge." Egos flare across Rust Valley as the teams prepare for the race.
A Rust Valley road trip steers Mike into the danger zone after Connor gives him an ultimatum: buy another car and Connor will blow up one from the Field of Dreams. Avery's "Deuce-and-a-Half" truck runs into transmission problems that put the budget and everyone's safety at risk.
"Hit to Pass" fever spreads throughout Rust Valley, as competing shops prepare for the annual race. JF struggles with the target on his back brought on by last year's win, and James West goes big, entering a car of his own for the first time. The cost of Avery's "Deuce-and-a-Half" music truck spirals out of control.
The "Hit to Pass" competition comes to Rust Valley, with local shops fighting to see who can unseat returning champ JF Kustoms. After pit crew repairs fail, a crash lands one driver in the hospital, while two others start throwing fists at each other between heats on the track.
Avery ropes Mike into a cross-country road trip to pick up the car of his dreams, but their plans take a sudden detour when he receives an unexpected call from his mother. Meanwhile, back at Rust Bros, an unexpected tenant, JF, borrows shop space from Mike to secretly restore a 1955 GMC truck as a surprise for his estranged brother.
Mike is determined to make a quick-and-easy money-maker out of a 1955 Bel Air wagon from his personal collection, but Cassidy and the crew have other plans. Meanwhile, Avery buys a rare truck from Big Donny, and embarks on an ambitious build that puts his mechanic skills, and his relationship with Shafin, to the test.
Connor enlists Rust Bros to build his dream car, and gets a taste of his own medicine when Mike is a stickler about the budget. James West goes for broke on a car from his past, a '50s Mercury truck on a Corvette frame, and Avery's dreams -- and his new shop -- are threatened when he makes Mike's old mistakes.
Mike takes on a build for his childhood best friend, but this year of surprises isn't done with him yet. Unable to get on board with his son's vision for a Chevy Malibu, and with Avery following in his footsteps and throwing good money after bad, Mike is forced to reveal an old secret -- and face the truth about Rust Bros uncertain future.
