Charismatic Guru Jagat leverages social media to spread the teachings of Yogi Bhajan, a mysterious Punjabi Sikh who brought his version of Kundalini yoga to the United States in 1969. Former followers of Yogi Bhajan discuss the social conditions of the ‘60s and ‘70s that led to the rise of Kundalini and anti-establishment spirituality.
Former followers recount the mythical persona Yogi Bhajan invented to preach enlightenment, equality, and a healthy lifestyle – as well as the rigor of his teachings, including physical hardships, unusual rules, and abuse. A spiritually seeking Katie Griggs finds her way to Kundalini, and in 2013, under the name Guru Jagat, opens the RA MA Institute in Los Angeles.
As Guru Jagat begins to enjoy the lavish lifestyle that Yogi Bhajan once did, former RA MA employees describe the business model of the company and the increasingly erratic behavior of its founder. Despite the release of a tell-all 2020 memoir about Bhajan, Guru Jagat and others continue to defend him.
As an online movement builds to discredit RA MA and Guru Jagat, more members come forward with their stories of abuse. Then, when COVID-19 hits, Guru Jagat begins to espouse wild conspiracy theories and a mistrust of the mainstream media as her business and health quickly unravel.
