When a young woman’s body is found in the icy waters of Poland’s Oder River, Detective Katarzyna Zawieja and her partner Trepa soon discover the victim recently gave birth before her murder. The investigation that unfolds proves personal for Zawieja, a widowed mother still reeling from her husband’s alleged suicide.

Preliminary evidence leads Zawieja’s team to question the victim’s husband Kosiński, whose suspicious debts and business dealings might steer them closer to the child’s whereabouts. But when Chief Pietrzak decides to assign Detective Radwan to assist Zawieja, their fraught working relationship is exacerbated by a shared grief of Zawieja’s late husband.

Searching for new clues, Zawieja and Trepa visit a psychiatric hospital, where the victim once worked – and where they suspect one of the patients could have contributed to her death. As pressure to find the missing child mounts, Zawieja receives a troubling visit, while Prosecutor Strzelecki is given a suspicious package.

As the police search for Wróbel, one of the victim’s patients, Zawieja visits a prison in Goleniów, where he once served time. Then, when the victim’s best friend is put in grave danger, Zawieja enlists the help of her young daughter Hania.

On the day of Magda’s funeral, Zawieja makes a desperate attempt to track down her elusive killer. At Goleniów prison, the interrogation of a notoriously dangerous inmate breeds new clues and even more suspicions about Magda’s murder.

When Strzelecki takes over the case, Zawieja defies orders as she follows the killer’s trail to a remote, war-torn island. While the threat of an accomplice looms large, Zawieja acts on a hunch that could finally bring the newborn to safety.
